Fundraising
I was most concerned about my ability to raise
the minimum to walk. I started by sending an email to everyone I knew. I
also put out collection jars (see the Thank You Page) raised more than $115 all
together. Within a couple of weeks, I had around $1,000. Boy was I worried. It
just didn’t feel like the money was going to happen, and Margaret and I agreed
that it was too risky for me to do the promissory sign in using my debit card
unless we got a lot closer. Margaret took the fliers and business cards and
mailed them to her friends and family. By the time the 15th rolled around, we
raised just over the minimum. More importantly, by the time the event was over,
we raised more than $3,200 to donate in honor of Kelly and Karen.
One of my last training walks, I walked with
Rebecca, who’d walked the previous few years, but was busy with the details of
building her house this year. She gave me lots of great advice. She also gave me
a check for $100 and told me to use it if it would help me reach the $2,100
minimum each walker and volunteer must raise. But if I made my minimum, I was to
take it with me to signup on the day of the event and give it to someone who
might not otherwise make it. What a generous way to give. I believe these are
the ladies she helped get in.
